1. JAZ OR ZIP DRIVE USERS
-------------------------
Once you reach the DOS prompt A:\, you will need to do the following
if you have either an Iomega/Epson Zip SCSI or Jaz SCSI drive. Run
GUEST.EXE before you start DataGone to assign a drive letter to your
Jaz or Zip drive.
If you have an Iomega/Epson Zip or Jaz parallel port drive, you will
need to keep the Iomega/Epson Zip Windows/DOS Install Disk handy. Upon
reaching the DOS prompt A:\, you must remove the DataGone Disk 1 and
insert the Iomega/Epson Zip Windows/DOS Install Disk. Type "guest,"
and the program will assign your removable Zip or Jaz drive a drive
letter. After the guest program has completed, reinsert your DataGone
Disk 1 and start DataGone.
2. SYQUEST REMOVABLE DRIVE USERS
--------------------------------
Follow the same procedure as for Jaz and Zip drives, but substitute
VISITOR.EXE for GUEST.EXE. Note: The SyQuest Sparc parallel drive is
not supported.
3. LS-120 DRIVE USERS
---------------------
To erase an LS-120 drive, you should avoid loading any DOS drivers
which shipped with your drive. DataGone will see your drive whether
or not there are drivers loaded for the LS-120. PowerQuest has seen
some drivers which cause an unusual double drive situation where the
LS-120 receives two entries in the erase/log selection windows. In
this case, when erasing, you should select the entry marked LS-120.
To log to an LS-120 drive, the real mode (DOS) drivers may need to be
loaded by the operating system at boot time. This usually involves
loading the .SYS file in the CONFIG.SYS. Installing the drivers under
DOS should configure this for you. If you have to use a driver to
be able to write to your LS-120 drive under DOS, you may see two
entries for the LS-120 in the erase/log selection window. When
selecting it as the log drive, choose the option which reflects the
drive letter that was assigned to the drive when the driver was
loaded. In other words, select the drive letter which you would
normally select under DOS to write to the LS-120.
4. SCSI DEVICES
---------------
For your convenience, we have secured a license from Adaptec, Inc. to
provide ASPI drivers in case you have SCSI disks. DataGone will
detect the drives and load the appropriate ASPI driver. DataGone will
attempt to load ASPI4DOS.SYS, ASPI7DOS.SYS, and ASPI8DOS.SYS. If your
SCSI card is not covered by one of these ASPI drivers, you will need
to manually load the necessary ASPI driver for your SCSI card before
running DataGone.
5. DRIVE OVERLAYS
-----------------
If your hard disk was formatted using Ontrack Disk Manager or
Micro House EZ-Drive, DataGone will recognize this and adjust
accordingly.
6. POWERSAVER MODE AND SUSPEND CAUSING HANGING
----------------------------------------------
If powersaver mode for the hard drive is enabled in the BIOS, the
machine may hang while DataGone is running. Some hard drives, when
put in sleep mode by powersaver utilities, will not spin back up when
a call is made to them; others will. If you are experiencing this
problem, we suggest disabling powersaver mode for the duration of the
erase and re-enabling it when you are done.
7. KNOWN ISSUES
---------------
A. Gateway systems and error 900H
---------------------------------
There is currently an incompatibility which exists between certain
Gateway laptops and DataGone. On these systems, DataGone
will produce the following error: ERROR 900H. DRIVE READ ERROR.
UNKNOWN ERROR CODE RETURNED BY BIOS. We are evaluating solutions
to this incompatibility at present, but this version of DataGone
will not be able to erase Gateway laptops which produce this error.
